Right as the year begins, seems like we are in for a treat with back to back big releases. Nanban, remake of the Bollywood blockbuster Three Idiots, is directed by Shankar and has no less than an ensemble star cast including Vijay, Jiiva and Srikanth. To call it the most expected movie of the year is naive, especially when the year has just started. But there's no denial to the fact that Nanban is riding high on expectations both from Vijay and Shankar fans. Not to mention, the movie's success in Hindi and Chetan Bhagat's best seller book's super success upon which it is based on.

The casting process begun on a high note after Vijay gave nod to star in the movie but in a matter of few weeks time, the Kaavalan walked out of the project due to some differences with the makers of the film. Gemini Film Circuit, which acquired the South Indian remake rights of 3 idiots, then approached Surya and almost signed him to play the lead role played by Aamir Khan in the original. But the actor also stepped out of Nanban, as the production house refused to meet his demands.

On the other end, Shankar kick-started the shooting of Nanban with the other cast: Ileana D'Cruz, Jeeva, Srikanth, and Sathyaraj. In the meantime, the makers of the film decided to go with their first choice – Vijay. They convinced him and sealed the deal finally.

Nanban is also Shankar's first remake. Shankar has always relied on his original stories and it's quite unusual for a director of his caliber to embark on a remake project. It is said that Shankar got the idea of remaking this movie after he watched it on DVD during the shoot breaks of his blockbuster film Endhiran. He fell in love with it immediately that he decided to remake it. He bought the rights and started the project soon after with Vijay, Jiiva and Srikanth in the lead.

The first schedule of the shooting was completed at Ooty followed by second in Dehradun. The entire shoots were completed by the end of August except a song. Some of the songs of Nanban have been shot in London, Buckingham and Europe. However, though the movie was ready by September last week, the bosses decided to push the release date due to Vijay's other release Velayudham.

This film also marks Ileana's reentry into Tamil. She has not been seen in the industry after her appearance in Kedi a few years ago although there are rumors every now and then about her possible Tamil project. Nanban's ensemble star cast also includes Sathyaraj, Anuya, S J Surya, Raghava Lawrence, Uma Padmanabhan and Manobala.

Nanban's music launch was held without much fanfare in an engineering college in Coimbatore. Sound track as well as teaser trailers of songs have been receiving positive responses ever since. The six songs Harris scored for the movie are not exactly replicas of the original versions but Harris has given his nice touch to each one of them thereby regionalising them.

However, Nanban has generated curiosity for many reasons and being Vijay-Shankar's film is the prime factor for the hype. Adding to that the movie is a remake of a popular Hindi movie, which bagged countless awards for various category and the audience want to see how the Tamil version has been made with the local sensibilities.

Certified as U, without any cuts by the Censor Board, Nanban will be distributed by Gemini Film Circuit. Advance bookings have already begun and a Telugu version is also being released on January 26th.

Nanban’s running time

nanban-vijay-11-01-12Nanban’s running time is 3 hours and 10 minutes, say sources. This means, Shankar has included a lot more scenes than it was in the original version 3 Idiots which had a running time of 164 minutes. Director Shankar has done a thorough research on the bookFive Point Someone, penned by Chetan Bhagat. 3 Idiots is inspired from this book and so is Nanban.
The film stars Vijay, Jiiva, Srikanth, Ileana and others. It will hit the screens on January 12th as a Pongal treat for all movie buffs.

Nokia Lumia 900

Nokia Lumia 900 "Ace" detailed, launching at CES 2012 through AT&T

By Lalith Naveen
January 11, 2012, 12:00 PM EST

Nokia is planning to launch the Lumia 900 Ace (codenamed Eloko) at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show next week in Las Vegas. Specifications and images have leaked out ahead of the introduction that paints a pretty good picture as to what we can expect from Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone.
For starters, the handset will feature a 1.4GHz processor, a 4.3-inch WVGA Nokia ClearBlack AMOLED display, 512MB of RAM and an 8MP rear-facing camera. At 4.3-inches, the screen is a bit larger than the 3.7-inch display found on the Lumia 800 but the resolution remains the same. The phone is said to ship with the Mango build of Windows Phone and includes an 1830mAh battery.
PocketNow is pretty certain that the device will be sold carrier locked but that it will contain the 1700MHz band required to work on T-Mobile’s 3G network. This means that a workaround to run the 900 via T-Mobile will likely surface soon after launch.
The Ace weighs in at 160 grams, just 18 grams more than the Lumia 800 which is likely due to the larger screen and the addition of an LTE radio. Thickness is expected to be around 12 millimeters.
There’s no mention of pricing for Nokia’s high-end Lumia phone but we should know more next week at CES. In addition to the 900, Nokia is rumored to be preparing another mid-range device for launch as well, the Lumia 719. The 900 Ace is set to launch with AT&T and we suspect the 719 would follow the same path.

Apple to release iPad 3

Rumor: Apple to release iPad 3 in March, iPad 4 following in October

Apple could be preparing to release two new iPads this year. The iPad 3 may be unveiled in March and a secondary tablet, dubbed the iPad 4, could arrive in October, according to Taiwan component makers viaDigiTimes.
Update: In addition to the information divulged earlier by DigiTimes, 9to5mac has found references about quad-core processing in iOS 5.1 which is currently in beta. This upcoming OS update from Apple is supposed to be paired with a next-generation iPad 3 and potentially the iPhone 5.
The iPad 3 is expected to ship with a QXGA (2084 x 1536 pixels) display and improved battery life but other than these two enhancements, we are told not to expect much more from the tablet. Previous rumors had pointed to two iPad 3 models, a mid-range and high-end product, being unveiled at iWorld on January 26.
The latest speculation indicates that the iPad 2 will receive a price cut to $399 with the introduction of the iPad 3. The lower price would allow Apple to compete with other vendors such as Sony, Motorola and Samsung that offer tablets at a lower price point.
Sources expect the real battle for market share to take place in the second half of 2012 when Apple ships their iPad 4. This would be around the same time that Microsoft releases Windows 8 and Intel introduces its Clover Trail-W platform. These sources suggest that the iPad 4 would feature the same 9.7-inch display as the iPad 3 but would include upgraded hardware specifications and new applications. This could perhaps include the Samsung-manufactured quad-core A6 processor that has been rumored to be the successor to the dual-core A5 SoC.
DigiTimes has a mixed track record, especially when it comes to Apple rumors. As such, we suggest you take this latest dose with a grain of salt.
